Managing Depression in Young People in Primary Care

Mood disorders are among the most common mental health concerns in young people.  Many similar disorders in adulthood can be traced back to adolescence, yet they are often very responsive to appropriate treatment.  Most young people with a mental health concern will not receive specialized service, but if they see a professional, it is most likely their primary care physician.

Below are some practice guidelines for managing depression in young people in primary care, an algorithm for the management of depression, an explanation of the system for rating supporting evidence, and telephone contact numbers for mental health services in the various zones of the province.  The guidelines were developed by the New Zealand Health Ministry, and any cultural terms refer to the indigenous Maori population, though they have some relevance to local practice.
