The Healthy Minds/Healthy Children Online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program aims to build the capacity of primary health care providers in the delivery of children’s mental health services and to facilitate interprofessional dialogue that contributes to the provision of collaborative services for children. These goals are accomplished though the provision of accredited, affordable, online CPD opportunities in children’s mental health for primary care practitioners across Alberta.

Overview of Addiction: Perceptions, Theories and Dependency

This course is designed to give you an overview of the most common theories of addiction and the process of dependency to substances and gambling. After completing this course you will be able to:
• Understand how perceptions are formed;
• Explain the difficulty in defining addiction;
• Explain how substance use and gambling are similar;
• Discuss the main models and theories of addiction;
• Explain the continuum of use and dependence and
• Define dependence, withdrawal and tolerance.

Inhalant Abuse

This course is designed to give you an introduction to Inhalant Abuse and how the use of inhalants impacts children and youth.
The objectives are:
• Describe what inhalants are and discuss the various categories;
• Describe how inhalant use impacts children and adolescents;
• Discuss how inhalants are used and the impact they have on the body and; • Outline screening, assessment and treatment practices for inhalant abuse
