  About our Professional Development Program

The Healthy Minds/Healthy Children Online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program aims to build the capacity of primary health care providers in the delivery of children’s mental health services and to facilitate interprofessional dialogue that contributes to the provision of collaborative services for children. These goals are accomplished though the provision of accredited, affordable, online CPD opportunities in children’s mental health for primary care practitioners across Alberta.

  • This initiative is fully funded by Alberta Health Services, and is offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, and with the co-sponsorship of the Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development at the University of Calgary FAculty of Medicine. It is fully accredited with the College of Family PHysicians of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Alberta College of Social Workers and the Canadian Counselling Assocaition.

The CPD program is intended for primary health care practitioners, including family physicians, paediatricians, psychiatrists, nurses, pharmacists, and mental health clinicians (e.g. psychologists, social workers) who see children and adolescents with mental health problems.

“I am so happy you are offering these courses. I am quite isolated here so I appreciate not needing to travel for professional development.”

Feedback from a past registrant

The CPD program’s learning objectives are:

  1. To increase the skills and confidence of primary care practitioners to more effectively address the mental health needs of their young patients; and
  2. To promote linkages among physicians and allied mental health clinicians treating children’s mental health problems.

Based on completed evaluations from our 2007/2008 curriculum, 94% of participants were satisfied overall with the modules, further respondents agreed that participating in the modules:

    • Had increased their knowledge (92%)
    • Is likely to improve their practice skills (92%)
    • Is likely to improve outcomes for their patients/clients (87%)

  • We are currently preparing to launch our 2009-2010 curriculum with a total of 15online modules . The modules will be offered between September 2009 and May 2010 on issues such as Mental Health Stigma, Adolescent Substance Abuse,Video Game Abuse, Techniques for Engaging the Family, Divorce, and more.
  • Presenters are Alberta practitioners selected on the basis of their expertise in identified areas, and represent the various professions in our target audience. An advisory committee made up of our main partners, collaborators, and representatives of family medicine, psychiatry and paediatrics guides the program in its selection of modules and presenters.

Each module is offered for one month, and consists of:

  1. One or more PowerPoint presentations with voice narration on the topic;
  2. Text-based discussion among registrants and between registrants and the presenter that includes asking questions, sharing experiences, and building networks.
  3. A web-based evaluation of the module.

“I found the presentation useful, but I always find the discussion most useful, learning how other people are handling problems, and having the opportunity to share the insight and wisdom of participants with more or different experience than I have.”

Feedback from a past registrant

  • Modules are offered asynchronously and entirely online, which means that registrants can access the module and participate in discussions anywhere, anytime. Some modules may also offer opportunities for Internet-based “live” meetings.
  • Technical requirements include a computer with sound capability (e.g. speakers), Internet access, and an e-mail address.
  • The Healthy Minds/Healthy Children Online CPD program has been fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (up to 3 or 4 MAINPRO-M1 credits per module, depending on module), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Section 1), and the Alberta College of Social Workers (up to 3 or 4Category “A” credits per module, depending on module).
  • There are no assignments, but please note that full credits require participating in the three aspects of the module outlined above: listening to the presentation, engaging in text-based discussions, and completing the module evaluation.

“I am a mental health therapist. I will now feel more confident about monitoring the progress of my clients when they are on medication. I will communicate more with the doctors, who have children and adolescents I work with.”
